02 — 3D Scanning
Capture the shape of what already exists.
3D scanning gives you a digital record of an existing object — a practical starting point for modelling, modification or reproduction.

Overview
What this involves
We scan the object to capture its geometry as a digital mesh. That scan can be used as a reference for new designs, for checking fit against surrounding parts, or as the basis for a reproduction.
Scan results depend on the object's size, surface finish and how accessible it is. Shiny, transparent or very dark surfaces may need preparation.
Scan capture and conversion into an editable CAD model are separate scopes. A scan is not automatically a production-ready model — any modelling work is quoted separately.
Example applications
- Reproducing discontinued parts
- Reference geometry for new designs
- Fitting accessories to existing products
- Digitising one-off objects
- Checking shape against a design
What to send us
- What the object is and its approximate size
- Surface finish (matte, glossy, transparent, dark)
- Whether it can be brought to us or needs on-site access
- What you plan to do with the scan
- Whether you need the raw scan, an editable model or a printed part
Not sure about some of these? Tell us what you know and we will work through the rest together.
Process
A simple project process
- 01
Describe the object.
Tell us its size, surface and intended use.
- 02
Agree the scope.
Scan only, scan plus modelling, or scan through to print.
- 03
Approve your quote.
Deliverables and pricing are agreed before work begins.
- 04
Scan and deliver.
You receive the agreed files or parts.
FAQs
Common questions
Will I get a CAD file I can edit?
Only if modelling is part of the quoted scope. The scan itself is a mesh, which is useful for reference but is different from an editable CAD model.
Can you scan anything?
Many objects scan well, but very glossy, transparent or fine-featured surfaces can be difficult. Send a photo and we will advise.
Can you reproduce a part from the scan?
Often, yes. Depending on the part, it may need modelling work before it can be printed accurately.
